Calvin Photographs Digital Collection During the mid-1800s, photography became a popular hobby and natural tool for scientists. Samuel Calvin (1840-1911), a professor in natural sciences at the University of Iowa (1873-1911) and a state geologist, took more than 5,000 photographs, which he used to illustrate geological features for class instruction, public lectures, and publications. A portion of his photographs are included in this digital collection, complete with subject and location information when available. In addition to documenting purely geological features, Calvin and his colleagues photographed mines, quarries, mills, buildings, people, and the University of Iowa campus. Universities & colleges 66. Campi Phlegraei, Observations on the Volcanoes of the Two Sicilies The two volumes of the Campi Phlegraei (1776) and the Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei (1779) provide a firsthand report from Sir William Hamilton that documents the late eighteenth century eruptions of Mount Vesuvius and are important to the science of volcanology due to the precise descriptions of the changes in the appearance of the volcano, the lava flows, and other volcanic activity. Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project (CLIP) At the beginning of the twentieth century, many Iowa communities secured funding from the Carnegie Corporation to build public libraries—101 in all. The Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project (CLIP), a partnership between the University of Iowa's School of Library and Information Science and Iowa's librarians, is charting the history of Iowa's Carnegie libraries through photographs, architectural drawings, and statistical data. The collection is intended to be a starting point for any researcher interested in the social, historical, and architectural history of Iowa libraries. Libraries 72. cARTalog Digital Collection The cARTalog grows from the drawers of the University of Iowa Libraries' main card catalog, which was retired in 2004. The cARTalog project organizers were able to salvage approximately only one quarter of the UI's card catalog for the project; the remaining cards were hauled away to recycling. The UI Libraries is only one of several libraries that have sought to honor the waning card catalog with a lasting monument or ceremony. cARTalog hopes to find as many creative uses as possible for the salvaged card catalog cards and generate a sense of community among those who loved the card catalog. Carver-VCU Partnership Oral History Collection These 15 oral history interviews deal with the history and culture of Carver, a primarily working class African American neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia, just north of VCU's Monroe Park campus. The interviews were originally recorded in 2000 as part of a grant funded project described as a "Living Newspaper." The "New Deal" commonly refers to the programs of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration that spanned the years 1933-1945. The Bienes Museum's CCC collection of approximately 200 titles and artifacts is the focus of this online exhibit. Celebrate Undergraduate Research and Creativity The projects on this site are first featured at an annual series of events, the Celebrate Undergraduate Research & Creativity (CURC) Showcase, that are held each spring and highlight the exciting, innovative, and creative work of students in all disciplines. Following the Showcase, an awards ceremony is held to recognize all participants and present awards to winners from the various events.
