Katherine Lederer Ozarks African American History Collection
Dr. Katherine Lederer, MSU Professor of English, spent much of her career working to preserve the region's African American heritage. Through archival research and by building close bonds with the area's African American community, Dr. Lederer compiled a collection of approximately 7,500 documents, many from the 19th century. The Lederer Collection includes over 2,500 photographs, numerous documents (such as marriage records and copies of church records), and Dr. Lederer's own notes and writings. The collection formed the basis of Dr. Lederer's 1986 work, Many Thousand Gone: Springfield's Lost Black History.

Katherine Lederer Exhibit
The original exhibit, "Springfield's Lost Black History," was developed by Dr. Katherine Lederer in 1982. Dedicated to the "Many Thousand Gone," the exhibit was sponsored by the Literary Calm Chat Club and Missouri State University, with funding from the Missouri Committee for the Humanities. The project involved copying and mounting many of the images from Dr. Lederer's own collection, as well as materials made available to her by the community. Through the years the exhibit collection grew and segments of it were displayed at museums, schools, and special events throughout the region. The descriptive text for the images was found in the published guide to the original exhibit and also among her files after the materials were transferred to Special Collections and Archives.

Kansas City Public Library, Missouri Valley Special Collections Digital Gallery
The Missouri Valley Special Collections (MVSC), which came into existence in 1960, consist of the non-circulating local history and genealogy resources of the Kansas City Public Library as well as the Library’s archives. Over 11,000 images of archival material such as letters, photographs, postcards, advertising cards, and maps were migrated from a former SQL-designed online database to the new CONTENTdm Missouri Valley Special Collections Digital Gallery.
CONTENTdm was adapted for use with our previous online Local History Index database, which did not include images. Special digital icons were created for different types of material, i.e., newspaper, magazine, books, etc., that function as the attached “file.” The Local History Index is a major research tool that began as entries on 3x5 index cards to facilitate finding information about the Kansas City area. The staff continues to add approximately 100 entries each month. Since 1999 the Index has progressed through three online migrations.

These journals were written by John Muir between 1867 and 1913. They include his 1867-1868 “thousand mile walk,” his early years in Yosemite, extensive travels in Alaska, his 1903 world tour, and his 1911-1912 voyage to South America and Africa.
