It includes several thousand scanned pages and represents HBCU libraries' first collaborative effort to make an historical collection digitally available. Collections are contributed from member libraries of the Historically Black College and University Library Alliance. The collection includes photographs, university correspondence, manuscripts, images of campus buildings, alumni letters, memorabilia, and programs from campus events. A Proud Heritage: 100 Years of Nursing Education A Proud Heritage: 100 Years of Nursing EducationIn the late 1980s, nursing alumni, faculty, and students began planning for the one hundredth anniversary observance of the founding of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. The school traces its rich heritage back to the organization of the Virginia Hospital Training School for Nurses which opened in 1893. Betsy A. Bampton (MCV Class of 1960) undertook the writing of a school history published as the centennial celebration was set to begin. In this abundantly illustrated work, Bampton and her collaborators chronicle the development and growth of the eight diverse schools and programs that formed the foundation of the VCU School of Nursing. 5. A. B. Nichols Panama Canal Collection A. B. Nichols Panama Canal CollectionA. B. Nichols Panama Canal Materials were gathered and organized during Nichols' tenure as Office Engineer. A.B. Nichols was first employed by the Isthmian Canal Commission in 1899 to survey the Nicaraguan route. In 1904, he was assigned to the Panama Canal, where he served as Assistant Engineer at the Gatun site. He was later promoted to Resident Engineer at Culebra Cut site. In 1906, he was appointed Office Engineer at Culebra Cut. He retired in 1914. Nichols was from Philadelphia. The materials in these notebooks and albums were collected/created by A.B. The first campus was in Santa Clara (1852-1871), and later moved to San Jose (1871-1924). The original buildings on the Stockton campus were designed in the English Tudor Gothic style, and this architectural approach has been maintained in subsequent construction. These aerial photographs and maps document the growth of the University of the Pacific over time, as well as the surrounding area of Stockton. Arabic Papyrus, Parchment, and Paper Collection Arabic Papyrus, Parchment, and Paper CollectionThis digital collection represents a selection from the Arabic Papyrus, Parchment & Paper Collection at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah. It is the largest of its kind in the United States, containing 770 Arabic documents on papyrus and more than 1300 Arabic documents on paper. It also includes several pieces on parchment. The collection was acquired by Prof. Aziz Suriyal Atiya, founder of the Middle East Center and the Middle East Library. Dr. Atiya and his wife, Lola, purchased the collection over a period of several years from dealers in Egypt, Beirut, and London. Dr. Atiya acquired a small group of fragments from the University of Chicago. The bulk of the collection originated in Egypt. A large number of pieces date to the period between 700 and 850 CE. The collection includes a significant number of documents from the pre-Ottoman period and thus offers unique source material on the political, economic, religious and intellectual life of Egypt during the first two centuries of Islamic rule and the period up to Ottoman domination.
